The deputy chief executive of Northern Rock is to take early retirement. David Baker is to step down from the bank, which was controversially nationalised earlier this month, on May 2. He has spent 34 years at Northern Rock, and was deputy chief through the funding crisis that began last summer and eventually led to the Government takeover. New executive chairman and City trouble shooter Ron Sandler was officially installed as the bank's executive chairman on February 22 after chancellor Alistair Darling signed off the nationalisation - the first such move since the 1970s. Mr Baker, 54, said the decision to quit was "entirely personal". He said: "Northern Rock has recently entered a new phase under temporary public ownership and I think this is the right thing to do at the right time.
11-year-old Midlothian girl assaulted in home; suspect sought
MIDLOTHIAN – Police are investigating the Friday afternoon stabbing of an 11-year-old girl in her home in northwest Midlothian.The girl was transported to Children's Medical Center in Dallas about 3:45 p.m. by Midlothian Fire Department ambulance in stable condition.“We have not had a chance to interview her at the hospital as of (Saturday) morning," said Don Cole, chief investigator with the Midlothian Police Department. “We are headed up there and, based on her condition, we are going to try and talk to her." .
Jersey search teams take a break

No one, they say, was ever saying that we should immediately pull out of Iraq. The statement that unnamed “people" are advocating a troop withdrawal from Iraq “right now" is a straw man, because it exaggerates the opposing viewpoint.
