| Above us lurks the skywalk subculture
Crystal Jaeger, 24, grew up in Nebraska but never learned to love the harsh winters. When the temps are bitingly cold, she refuses to go outside unless she absolutely, positively has to. Luckily, she can walk from her place of work, Security National Properties at 13th and N streets, to grab coffee, eat lunch, take a speed-walking break and even make the short trek to a parking garage at the end the day — all without going outdoors to face Jack Frost in all his gleeful sadism.See, Jaeger is part of a different species of Lincolnite: the Skywalkers. .
Coachella Will Make A Lovely Business Trip, In Bigger Than The Sound
It's the day when the secretive geniuses at Goldenvoice lift the curtain and reveal just what form of musical madness they made happen for us this year. Surely, it is something epic, something can't-miss. Probably Bowie and the Moz and Kevin Shields jamming together as the sun sets over the Empire Polo Fields, while Daft Punk plugs in the Pyramid across the lawn and Kylie and Madge begin limbering up in the dance tent. And Thom Yorke and Kanye will be there, doing a live version of The Eraser and handing out 7-inches and sunglasses and Ecstasy. It's going to be amazing. You have to be there. You have to. This is all running through my head as I read the e-mail. "Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival announces line-up [yes! yes! yes!] ... tickets on sale Friday, January 25 at 10:00 am [OK, OK ...
Monday wild card
And so, I'm making a plea to all of you to help me out with material. Apart from not being as smart, talented, or handsome as Dave (above), I have two other key disadvantages: I live and work in Spokane, and don't get over to North Idaho much. So I don't have much of a handle (pun intended) on the local political scene. I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier. I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post. And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy.
Colorado Springs authorities warn of police impersonators
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs authorities are warning drivers to beware of police impersonators on Interstate 25. Police say they've received several reports of people in unmarked cars with red and blue lights on the front pulling over drivers. Police say one impersonator asked a female driver for sexual favors in exchange for not issuing a summons. In most cases the impersonators ask for driver's licenses and other personal information. Descriptions of the impostors' vehicles include a blue four-door sedan and a silver sport-utility vehicle. Police issued the warning over the weekend. ——— Information from: The Gazette, http://www.gazette.com .
Fans, foes clash on Kaiser parking plan
A proposed 270-space parking lot for Kaiser Permanente Medical Center ran into considerable opposition during a public meeting Thursday night in San Rafael. More than half of the two dozen speakers voiced outright opposition to the project or serious concerns regarding the environmental effects, visual changes, noise - or disbelief that the 2.5-acre lot would not increase traffic in the neighborhood. About 75 people, including San Rafael City Manager Ken Nordhoff and Marin County Schools Superintendent Mary Jane Burke, attended the meeting. "Is building a parking lot in our best interest?" asked longtime Terra Linda resident Lee Fitzgerald. The comments will be taken into consideration for a report written by a seven-member advisory committee of representatives from local neighborhood associations, schools and parent groups appointed by Dixie School District trustees.
The tiger kidnapping
A "tiger kidnapping" is the term given to the taking hostage of bank or security employees, or their families, to carry out a robbery, as happened at the Securitas depot in Tonbridge. It gets its name from the predatory nature of the crime. Such kidnappings are growing and will increasingly involve "softer banking sector targets as well as cash-rich businesses", according to Control Risks, the security and business intelligence consultants. In 2006, the latest year for statistics, there were 20 tiger kidnappings in the UK, up from seven in 2001, with many more aborted attempts left unrecorded, Control Risks said. "As physical security has improved at the traditional heist targets such as major banks, criminals have focused on the human element," said James Lewry, a senior consultant at Control Risks.
Principal sees technology as supplement to education
He now writes a blog for his staff after attending a half-day Northside Independent School District workshop on blogging last year. The elementary students know a little bit about word processing and PowerPoint presentations because that's what the school teaches them, Van Winkle said. And fifth-graders are beginning to get into iPods, he said. He sees technology as a tremendous benefit in the classroom, but it has to aid the learning process, he said. "I think that anything we can use within ethical and legal parameters that fosters high-level thinking is good for kids," Van Winkle said. "You're putting them into a whole another world of being able to think outside the box." Van Winkle remembers his first computer was an Apple IIe in 1986 when he worked as a fifth-grade teacher.
